چکیده

Photosynthetic action spectra of several cyanobacteria show a peak at about 650 nm, the height of which is correlated with allophycocyanin content in the strains examined. Allophycocyanin harvests light more efficiently than do phycocyanin and phycoerythrin. The contribution of chlorophyll a absorption to photosynthetic activity is barely detectable in cells of normal pigment composition. Chlorophyll a becomes the major light-harvesting pigment in cells that have been physiologically depleted of phycobiliproteins.

Phycocyanin, cyanobacterial antioxidant: structure, function and applications

Phycobilins, open-chain tetrapyrrole pigment molecules, serve as accessory photosynthetic light-harvesting pigments in red algae and cyanobacteria. Phycobilin pigments are covalently linked with proteins and formed phycobiliproteins are organized into large macromolecular complexes called phycobilisomes on the top of the thylakoid membranes. In deep water, only green light is available, thus ph...

AplA, a member of a new class of phycobiliproteins lacking a traditional role in photosynthetic light harvesting.

All known phycobiliproteins have light-harvesting roles during photosynthesis and are found in water-soluble phycobilisomes, the light-harvesting complexes of cyanobacteria, cyanelles, and red algae. Phycobiliproteins are chromophore-bearing proteins that exist as heterodimers of alpha and beta subunits, possess a number of highly conserved amino acid residues important for dimerization and chr...

Photosynthetic Pigments: Perplexing Persistent Prevalence of ‘Superfluous’ Pigment Production

Phycobilins function as light-harvesting pigments in most cyanobacteria and red algae. Although green cyanobacteria of the genus Prochlorococcus express genes encoding enzymes that direct the synthesis of phycobilins, these pigments do not appear to play a role in light harvesting in Prochlorococcus. Now, it is shown that cyanophages infecting Prochlorococcus also contain genes for phycobilin-s...

Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Exciton Dynamics, and Photochemistry of Single Allophycocyanin Trimers

We report a study of the allophycocyanin trimer (APC), a light-harvesting protein complex from cyanobacteria, by room-temperature single-molecule measurements of fluorescence spectra, lifetimes, intensity trajectories, and polarization modulation. Emission spectra of individual APC trimers are found to be homogeneous on the time scale of seconds. In contrast, their emission lifetimes are found ...

The Coevolution of Phycobilisomes: Molecular Structure Adapting to Functional Evolution

Phycobilisome is the major light-harvesting complex in cyanobacteria and red alga. It consists of phycobiliproteins and their associated linker peptides which play key role in absorption and unidirectional transfer of light energy and the stability of the whole complex system, respectively. Former researches on the evolution among PBPs and linker peptides had mainly focused on the phylogenetic ...
